Best Time to Visit The Tablelands are beautiful year-round, but the dry season (May–October) is ideal for clear skies and outdoor exploring.

Day 2 – Explore & Discover

Morning: Enjoy breakfast lakeside, then pack up and head towards Atherton for a day of exploring.
Late Morning: Step inside The Crystal Caves, a man-made cave museum filled with dazzling crystals and gemstones collected by René Boissevain. Crack your own geode and learn the story of how one man built this incredible attraction by hand.

Start your day with a visit to The Crystal Caves, a unique man-made cave museum hand-built by René Boissevain. Wander through stunning crystal displays, crack your own geode, and discover how one man’s passion created one of Queensland’s most extraordinary attractions.

Lunch – A Taste of Tradition

Walk just a few doors down to the Barron Valley Hotel, an art deco gem that’s been serving locals and travellers since the 1940s. Enjoy a hearty pub meal and soak up the atmosphere of one of Atherton’s most iconic landmarks.

Afternoon – Step Back in Time

After lunch, take a 20-minute drive to Historic Village Herberton, a living museum where history comes alive. Explore the original buildings filled with antiques, stories, and demonstrations that capture the spirit of the pioneering era. Wander at your own pace and immerse yourself in the charm of Australia’s early days.

Optional Return Route – WWII Trail via Mareeba

On your drive back to Cairns, take the scenic route through Mareeba to explore the WWII Trail:

  • Stop at the Rocky Creek Igloo, part of the former Rocky Creek Hospital Complex, the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere during WWII.
  • Visit the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre, where you’ll find engaging displays about the region’s wartime history, pioneering heritage, and Indigenous culture.
  • Continue your return drive through Kuranda for a relaxed journey back to Cairns.

Yungaburra Markets & Crystal Caves Day Trip

Theme: Markets, shopping, country charm, and a relaxed Tablelands day out.

Morning – Markets & Village Vibes

Time your visit for a Yungaburra Market day (held on the fourth Saturday of each month), one of the largest and most loved markets in Tropical Far North Queensland. Browse stalls filled with local produce, handmade crafts, jewellery, art, and delicious treats.
After exploring the markets, pop into Pluto & Nessi, the quirkiest little puzzle and game shop you’ll ever find. It’s packed with clever games, brainteasers, and gifts that delight both kids and adults.
Take a leisurely stroll through the village streets, there are boutique shops, art galleries, and cafés to enjoy.

Lunch – Country Pub Charm

Continue your journey to Atherton and enjoy lunch at the Carrington Hotel, right next door to The Crystal Caves. This modern pub serves generous meals and has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Afternoon – Crystal Experience

After lunch, visit The Crystal Caves, a spectacular man-made cave museum filled with gems and minerals from around the world. Return Journey – Scenic & Serene

Drive back to Cairns via Kuranda, taking in the lush rainforest views as you descend the range.
